Retailers always engage in some Christmas calculus to get you to loosen your wallet during the holiday season, but this year it feels a little more desperate. Stores are starting their promotions earlier in the hopes of luring in customers quickly to spend money — before they’re tapped out or the markdowns get any steeper.

So far, Sears, which has been struggling, is leading the promotional pack, announcing 450 door busters, or specially priced items, from 5 a.m . to 11 a.m. on Black Friday.

Cyber Monday, the supposed biggest online shopping day of the year, may be facing extinction. Already under attack from sources saying it’s not really the biggest day of online shopping, the Acquity Group, an eCommerce consulting firm, says soon it won’t even be in the top 10.

According to a study by the National Retail Federation, 40.0 percent of shoppers say that sales or promotions is the largest factor when determining where to shop.

That number was even higher in a study by Deloitte LLP, which found that 73 percent of consumers said they would shop at stores that had the best value and 72 percent said they would shop at stores that had the lowest — far outpacing other factors such as location, quality of merchandise or customer service.

With the holiday season right around the corner that can only mean one thing its time to gear up for the annual Black Friday events. What is Black Friday you might ask, it’s the day after thanksgiving, the kick off of the holiday shopping season, a day you will find great deals, and lots of people. If you have never done a black Friday before you will need to have a plan worked out ,you can start this by getting a notebook and all the ads from the stores in your area, they will come out on thanksgiving in your morning paper.

Shoppers might have to work a little harder this year to scoop up the best bargains on Black Friday, the traditional post-Turkey Day shopping kickoff.
Retailers aren’t slashing 75% off everything in the store, as they did last year when the deteriorating economy caught them with too much inventory. Rather, they are offering truly hot deals on only a handful of items, such as a $149 laptop computer (OfficeMax), a 32-inch LCD TV for $246 (Target) and a $579 washer-dryer combo (Sears).
